salines of Occitanie: family holidays in Peyriac-de-Mer
If there’s any blog post written in 2020 that doesn’t start with something about the global pandemic… well, it wasn’t written in 2020. I’ll only say this - we had very different plans for this year (didn’t everyone?!). I kicked it off all excited about all the plans we had (just see this)… and then none of it happened.
We replaced a dream years-in-the-making trip with our own backyard. Instead of swimming in Lake Baikal, we canoed in the salines of Occitanie. Not bad either.
Did you know that “South of France” is not only Côte d'Azur or the vineyards of Bordeaux? I mean, you did know that if you’ve ever seen the map of France - there’s actually quite a bit of land spreading in between but many people seem to forget about it. I did too, to be honest, and never really considered Occtanie as a very exciting holiday destination but in all means - it is. Small towns and villages are just as charming as Provence is, while the salines provide a different landscape to this known from the Riviera.
I mean, how can you not be speechless with this view and yes those are pink flamingos! Another bonus - no tourists. Some, obviously, but nothing in comparison to Cannes, Niece or Cap d’Ail.
We stayed in Peyriac-de-Mer only 20 minutes from Narbonne, and most of the photos are exactly from there. I must have hundreds of pictures of the pink flamingos inhabiting the area and the sunrise on the local saline - breathtaking!
